Smoking in the 'Cheers' bar, downtown Boston...

Hi all. When someone comes to write the history of smoking on TV in North America, it is`possible that my beoved 'Cheers' sitcome may rate quite an entry. Don't know if anyone else has noticed, but in the early series, many of the side characters are to be seen smoking happily in Sam's bar. Somewhere around the departure of Ms Neurosis (the admirable Diane, who is seen to be smoking in high agitation in one late episode), an unspoken curfew comes down. Upon Sam's return, Boston has been magically transformed into an entirely healthy and whilesome city.

Maybe there was a policy link between the rise of smoking bans down the East Coast and the guest appearance of a future Presidetial candidate on the show?!
